as for your green beans, how many pounds did you have to throw away so far ? I would love to roast my own, but i'm seeing green beans sold at $7/lb, which isn't so much cheaper than $16/lb, once one factors in time of effort and electricity.

lastly, I was recently in China and surprised to find that Starbucks has a Starbucks Reserve service, where they actually train people to do proper barista tasks, as opposed to rely upon fully automatic espresso machines. The semi-automatic machine used even had a touch screen. Does anyone know what this machine is (something is etched onto the groups, but i can't read it, picture not mine)

+1 for the Aeropress with freshly ground beans. I use stainless steel reusable filter but I don't think that makes a difference for taste.

I think my Mokka brews stronger coffee, so sometimes I still get it out.

Coffee while traveling

short of lugging what's on the bench and buying an inverter, what's one to do when traveling?

Basically, I drank little coffee in the last three weeks as I first traveled to South Carolina for Thanksgiving and then to China. I mean, fortunately, there's Starbucks everywhere, but that cost really adds up (a latte costs what 1/4 pound of beans costs me).

so, Drip is not Espresso.

I will start roasting my own beans on Christmas day. Got the roaster. The wife has some beans under the Christmas tree for me. When she is cooking dinner I will be on the back porch playing with the bean roaster.

I roast using an often recommended popcorn popper (Poppery II) and usually get my green beans from either Sweet Maria's or Happy Mug. I'd like to eventually try out a Behmor 1600 though.

I’ve been home roasting for more than 20 years. Beans from Sweet Maria’s. It’s not the most fun in snow and winter but worth it.

Behmor 1600 is a solid unit, well worth the money.

It's cyclocross but with coffee. Grinder is great. My buddy sent me Red Bird Espresso beans from Montana.

Did I say I don’t roast my own beans? Been roasting since 2001 beginning with a poppery II. Now I’m semi pro.

Beans from Olam in 60 or 69 kg burlap.

I will tackle my own electrical work and auto repair, but I leave bean-roasting and beer-brewing to the pros!

It's easy to get pro level results roasting coffee. I too have been at it for over 20 years and still buy my beans from Sweet Maria's. It allows me to consume some of the best coffee available anywhere and at a considerable savings when you amortize the cost of the roaster.

I started with a Poppery II, progressed to a Unimax 2000, and currently use a HotTop. All still function and are still used in various locations.

It's handy to have a heated garage and a small vacuum for cleaning up the chaff. It only takes about 20 minutes once or twice a week and I simply need to be on hand to monitor the roast while I piddle with other things in the garage.

True... I heard that roasting doesn't have the same pleasant aroma as grinding and brewing does. Is this a myth or not that bad ?

what roaster is on the Rancilio Silvia PID level? Also, how many pounds should I expect to go through before getting things dialed in?
