10 to 11 Speed - Hub, derailleur and Gearing Question

When I switched from 11 speed shimano to 12 speed sram axs, I ended up with an "extra" 11 speed ultegra groupset.

The bike I want to put it onto has an 8/9 10 speed chris king classic hub. As I understand it the option I have is to get a 34 tooth mtb cassette as it should fit over the flange on the hub.

Out of curiosity, I tried putting the 11 speed cassette on the hub, with one less gear and with the 1.85mm spacer. It fits snuggly, with no wiggle between the cogs.

Questions:

1) Will a SS derailleur work with a 34 tooth cog and 34 tooth chain ring, if not will a wolf tooth link make it work, or should I just get the GS derailleur or an 810 derailleur?
2) As 10 cogs and spacers fit properly, is it ok to just use it as a 10 speed? It is a middle cog that is removed? Any issue running it as a 10 speed, and locking out the derailleur so it only shifts so far?
3) Is a jump from 15 to 19 teeth too big or should I go 17 to 21? Both are 4 tooth jumps, but wondering which is a better jump.

The relative difference between cogs gets smaller as they get larger so you want to have the shift be between bigger cogs if the gap is larger, all things considered. I'm not sure which would be better in your case, it depends on the shifting geometry of your bike and which gears you actually want to use. Either one, the shifting probably won't be great.

34 chainring 11-34 running 11 on 10 makes for a less than ideal range, every cog seems necessary. I'd get the 11s MTB 11-34 that fits 10s freehubs, or even just a regular 10s 11-34 - and road link.

I think 6800 SS is less likely to work with 34t cassette than R8000 SS but neither is a sure thing. Online seems to show more people having success than not, I had more failure IRL. When I did get it to work it was by reversing the b-screw but the biggest cog was always noisy and less confident.

If you want to just use your 11s cassette on the 10sp freehub it's also pretty easy to remove 1.85mm off the back of a 11sp cassette (provided the cogs are on a carrier) to fit on a 10sp freehub.

Most hubs can take this, but there is a chance the largest cog will sit too far inboard and rub spokes due to flange spacing and configuration. I have done more of these than I can recall for various clients and pretty sure it will work on a King classic, but sorry cannot quite be 100% sure there. Good news is that the modified cassette is still completely usuable on an 11sp FH by just adding in a 1.85mm spacer - which is pretty easy to find since they came with almost all 11sp hubs initially when 10sp was still prevalent.

Workholding was the only dilemma and I solved it by turning down an expanding collet to hold the cogs. Feel free to PM me if you want more detail/pics.

Here is a link to a previous discussion where I sorted several for member Look585.

So I bit the bullet and bought the following

34 tooth 11 speed cassette
R8000 GS (long cage) rear derailleur.
New chain

Set the entire thing up, took longer than it should have due to my daughters wanting to help me, but it was fun showing them how to uses torque wrenches, clippers and just hanging out with them.

With the exception of forgetting to remove the spacer, the first time I installed the cassette to check fit, was super easy.

Not sure if the new tension adjuster on the front derailleur is as big of a break through as I told it was, but it was easy to set up.

So you were able to get the 11 speed cassette on the CK 10s hub?

Yes, I was able to get a Shimano CS-HG800 11 speed cassette 11-34 on a nearly 20 year old 10 speed Chris king Classic hub with no issues other than filing down some of the "bite" marks on the hub and forgetting to remove a spacer.

It sits perfectly on the hub and the derailleur has clearance to the spokes.

But this only (generally) works with the 11-34 cassette (which is basically a mountain bike cassette relabeled as a wide-range road cassette). The big cog is dished past the inside edge of the freehub a bit. This is also why this cassette needs a spacer when used on an 11-speed freehub.

A 11-32 or 11-28 cassette will not work (generally).

So will an HG700-11 (11-34) cassette work? Or only an HG800?

That one should work, too. Just slide on to the 10 speed freehub, without the spacer. Gives new life to 10 speed hubs if you're running 11 speed Shimano.

Yes, both Shimano 11-34 11-speed cassettes are the same general design.
