Campagnolo 12 speed crankset compatability?

Hey guys,
New to the forum, mostly buying parts from the classified section.

I'm thinking about going with Campy's mechanical 12 speed groupset for my next build.

For the crankset, can I use any 2x crankset / chainrings? Will the 2015-2017 Super Record 11 Crankset work?

Another question, if I had existing super record 11 groupset, can I just change the shifters, and rear derailleurs, and cassette to 12 speed, and reuse the existing front derailleur? Or will the front derailleur not work with the 12 speed shifters for some reason?

Thanks for your help!

UNless campagnolo did something very martian with the new 12 speed stuff, IMO it should work fine with 11 speed cranks. Wonder if the new 12 speed chain works with 11... that thing would be super silent...

I'm assuming the 12 speed chain would be narrower than the 11 speed chains, so I'm not sure if the front chainring spacing would be narrower as well.

I've never read of anyone trying it, but I'd be surprised if an 11 speed crank wouldn't work. The FD will probably work too. I'd try just the RD, chain, cassette and shifters. Adding the FD wouldn't be a big deal, if it didn't work.

I wouldn't use a 12 speed chain with 11.

I put 12 speed on my Ottrot and kept the 11 crank. Works fine. A less experienced wrench will tell you otherwise, different chainline, etc.

No problem unless you’re going disk.

Same here...used 11-speed SR crankset with 12-speed chain/drive train. Worked fine, but I have since switched to the SR-12 crankset.

Same chainring sizes?

So we know it "works"... wonder if front shifting is perceptibly degraded in any way?

36/52. Not that I really noticed, no. However, I rode it like that for a fairly short time before getting the 12-speed SR crankset for a decent price and switching over, but it worked fine for me while I had it .

Looking for an update on this...

I'm in the middle of a Record 12 build on the Seven Axiom and found a beautiful Super Record 11 compact crankset (50/34) in my spares pile (don't ask!)

Everything else is Record 12 - derailleurs, cassette, shifters, chain, etc.

There's no way to update the chainrings due to the different bolt patterns, so I would need to replace the crankset with a 12 speed. Frankly I like the classic look of the 11 and older. I haven't gotten accustomed to the new look yet...

Has anybody run a 12 speed setup on a Record 11 crankset for an extended period? If so, how is the shifting, noise, wear, etc.

Thanks!
