I make mine from traffic cones. You can purchase them or find damaged ones on the side of the road.

Maybe with more fragile fenders like Honjos, but stainless-steel Berthoud fenders can easily bear the weight.

As for cleaning up leather mudflaps, apply some Nikwax every few months and they will stay clean and supple.

What a confounding question you pose, young man.

Id like to revive this.

Anything new here? Id like to get one of the Berthoud leather mudflaps for the the Handsome fenders I just ordered, but apparently leather is a no-no for effectiveness?

The Berthouds work fine for me, and I never touch them with any sort of treatment. The VO I have is really stiff leather and I have never felt compelled to put it on a fender.

They work, I have never had any trouble with them. They are a little heavy. Milk jugs work great though

The berthouds are expensive, if you buy milk, that's free.

a nice fendered bike deserves something better than a make-shift milk container

yep. this is where I fall on this subject. I seldom ride with groups in the winter or rain. and when I do, I'm usually the only dude with fenders. people fight to be on my wheel, because the spray is MUCH less than what other people are throwing at them (full on "Belgian Facial").

Rubber flooring scraps!

My rain bike has stainless steel Berthoud fenders. I made some flaps from scraps of rubber flooring, the type you see in commercial gyms. We had our mud room resurfaced, and I kept the remnants. This might be one of the best materials I have ever used. The little brown specs even hide the dirt

Buddy Flaps Trucker Girl (reflective)

You would not believe the funny/positive comments I get from both men and women as they go past.
And the one in front definitely keeps my feet warmer by knocking down all the spray.
