C59 Cracked BB

The first pic shows what looks like a paint crack. I rode it for a few hundred miles and by the time I took it in for service new lines formed in pic 2. Not taking chances so I had the shop sand the area and the BB is toast. Bought new and had a tad over 26k miles. No crashes. If you’re a C59 owner with high mileage please inspect your BB. While it's probably outside of warranty now, it doesn't look beyond the capabilities of carbon repair if you like the frame and want to keep it going.

Agreed. I bet that’s fully fixable.

Agree with everyone else. The great benefit of carbon is that things like this can be repaired.

I would contact Colnago regardless of warranty. I wouldn't expect that
with a C59, they certainly taught their quality so they would probably like to see it. If you follow through with Colnago let us know how they respond.

I would start with Colnago, but given where that crack is, I'm skeptical it can be repaired by a third party shop. It ain't like it's a bash in a chainstay or top tube.

My initial reaction is that frame is toast.

I didn’t get an explanation for what might have caused this crack but I wasn’t really expecting one anyway. I did however get an offer for a new C64 at a reduced price. Pricing aside, would you buy one? Check your BB C59 owners!

That of course depends on the price!

But if you don't take their offer, get it repaired. A crack like that is very easy to repair and might be much cheaper than you think.

I agree and DON'T let Colnago repair it. When selling them, we had the metal BB shell break loose on a C40 when trying to take BB cups out. Colnago said they would warranty/repair(all via the distributor..Todson??)..8 MONTHS later it came back, with a $800 repair bill. Be willing to bet Calfee or Ruckus could fix it.

Eek! That is ridiculous. I had a dent in my top tube, granted it was not big, that ended up costing ~$300 to fix. The hardest part was the decal and painting (where the dent was). On the bottom of the BB, in a solid color, should cost about $200 honestly.

Contacted Toby at Hottubes and he said repairable at around $400 and he does repainting too so I think I’m going to send it to him.

Toby is great. And maybe a three hour drive for you. Roadtrip?

I'm surprised to see that the BB lug is failing. That should be about the thickest carbon on the whole bike. Can't imagine what would cause that.
