Brazen daytime bike theft

Stolen from 100ft away from me, in my line of sight, while locked to itself like this. With at least 50 other people around.

The perp just rolled up on a bike, lifted mine up, and kept riding. Insane.

He rode off carrying the bike in one arm? Surely he couldn't have been going very fast. Did anyone try running after him?

If you live in an urban area get one of these too. Not perfect, but maybe enough to get the perp to move on.

Damn that sucks. Sorry.

A good reminder to never ever leave your bike not locked to something, unless you 100% trust the place (ie a cafe), or are within arm’s reach of the bike.

Sorry about the loss. That was very bold of the thief.

I am curious why you wouldn't lock your bike to the bike rack next to it?

Wow that sucks! FWIW - it might be slightly better to free lock the back wheel instead of the front so the theif cant just lift the handlebar and let the back wheel roll freely and support him.

For the determined thief, nothing will work.
My bike was locked to a street sign.
During daylight, thieves removed the sign and lifted the bike over the top of the pole.
Pole was high enough that the thieves must have climbed on top of a van or pick up truck to lift the bike over the top of the pole.

Old photo.

In this case there was some rain so I moved the bike under cover. Locked and visible like it was, I was more worried about the bags on it than the bike itself.

Bike thieves have no fear of the law and the chances of catching them or recovering the property are slim and none. I pass by 3-4 sidewalk bicycle chop shops on the way to work and they make very weak attempts to screen the activities and their inventory of frames and parts.

Good luck with your hunt…been there, done that as my stolen bike was locked to a rack, which is mounted to a wall in the apartment’s bike storage locker. They just pried open the door lock, cut all the cables and took all but one bike. Perhaps they ran out of time or couldn’t fit more bikes in their vehicle. No camera or alarm by the landlord either and of course the insurance claim was on me.

I too an sorry for the OP. Locked cage??

BUT, determined theif VS theft of opportunity with ease of opportunity lessens the odds demonstrably.

In this case a thief with VG wheelie talent could have ridden it away VS ran away with it once out of the cage.

Probably gave a nice thanks to the exiting biker that handed the open door politely to the perp. ;O

Better luck going forward...

Anyone tried something like this?

Bordo Alarm Lock
$170.00
Something to make bike thieves think twice: as well as the ultra-safe mechanical features boasted by all of the folding locks in the ABUS BORDO range, the BORDO™ Alarm 6000A is the first folding lock anywhere in the world to sound an alarm (at a volume of 100dB) if it detects an attempted attack. It does so thanks to the smart 3D Position Detection sensors, which detect the smallest of movements in all three dimensions. The sensor technology incorporated into the BORDO™ Alarm 6000A can distinguish between picking attempts and the small vibrations which occur when the lock is connected, for example, or a football bounces nearby; in these situations, the lock will emit a small warning beep but will not sound a full alarm. Acoustic signals provide information on battery level and activity status.

Bike thieves have no fear.

A couple of years ago someone's video made the news... a bike locked to a city bike rack on very busy Bloor avenue in Toronto. Bike thief using a batter operated grinder to cut the lock, got on the bike and rode away. Someone said stop and he told him to F off... probably 50 people watching and video taping on their phones. No one dare actually stop him.

This is why we are doomed as a species.
