Good for individuals wanting this procedure in Canada. Wondering how prevalent non-mesh surgery is in the United States, especially in the northeast.

A bit late to the party but wanted to share my experience.
I had open/mesh surgery in 2016 and it has been a nightmare for me since.
I have consistent pain and discomfort around the whole area on a constant almost daily basis, it severely limits how I can play with my kids, I can't even try and think of how many nights of sleep I have lost due to the pain, the list goes on.....
But basically it has been a living hell for me.

Your situation is not uncommon in my limited experience. I have had more than a dozen discussions with individuals, both in person an online, concerning their hernia repair. They have ranged from most with complete recovery with no or few negative effects to others that had long term issues. These included a significant number with ongoing minor pain to others experiencing serious lifestyle limitations.

This is somewhat concerning, since I was given the impression by doctors and others that this was considered an established, almost routine, procedure in almost all cases.

Yeah exactly.
My Surgeon told me that, and I quote, "you will be as good as new in 6 weeks"
Not once did he mention any chance of something going wrong, or weighing the options etc...
Made it sound like it so basic pretty much like going to the dentist to fill a cavity.
I would have been way better off had I not fixed it/had the surgery.
The pain that I have been dealing with since, is WAY worse then any discomfort I had from the actual hernia

The challenge is, as I understand it, is that ongoing discomfort isn't really a medical issue. It's the organ strangulation that happens if things get through the tear and now you're on your way to the ER for emergency repair.

That was my biggest concern, and I took it really easy until I got scheduled with Dr. Reinhorn in Boston. Two days of operative discomfort and then I was good.

Yeah that is correct, but in my case the tear was very minor and the doctor said I didnt need to do the surgery but I might as well to get rid of the discomfort.
