I think of myself as a map geek and couldn't place your location off the top of my head. After a little internet stalking, that area looks like it could be a really fun place to ride.

Hahaha... Are you a fellow GeoGuesser player?
It's incredible riding up here! Mountains in every direction, and some quiet valleys and rural farm roads. |

I mean, I do stupid rides all the time without even trying, starting with a bad idea followed by multiple bad decisions leading to great bodily discomfort and/or mechanical breakdowns. I prefer to call these rides “epic”.

I used to live in this gated community and would ride this loop 15-20 sometimes after work in the dark since it was relatively safe and well lighted. It was also well paved and always had a fresh coat of slurry. My stupid idea, but it was too mind numbing to actually do was ride it over and over for a century. A kind of anti epic ride.

Warmup to a stupid ride.
Last week I decided to ride up every side street along one of the canyon roads near my house. Little did I realize that many of them ended up with 1/4 or more mile of 12 to 20% grade at the top. I was so gassed that by the time I hit the last climb for for home I was barely able to make it up in lowest gear without zig-zagging like a newspaper boy. And did I mention the 39/25 gearing? I got it done! The weather actually looks great/better all week, but knowing how life can get in the way of the best laid plans, I just went for it today despite a chilly 29 degrees at the start. It didn't warm up much, but was made bearable by the fact that I'm climbing for ~40 minutes and only face about 10 minutes of cold descending.
Added a few bonus miles to hit the 10k' mark at mile 52.5. Elapsed time was 4h58m which encompassed the bike swaps, a shoe change and a bit of layering up and down every lap. Moving time was 4h31m. Essentially all liquid nutrition with the exception of one caffeinated gel at the 3 hour mark. One bottle per lap/hour with ~90g of carbs. It was a good proof of concept for an Everest attempt I'd like to knock out next year on this same road. It feels do-able, but would require an additional 11 laps and definitely an extra bail out gear or two. For my order I went SS 29er, Ti 27.5, 3T Strada, Hakka, then TCR. Kind of a "hardest" to easiest in terms of weight, gearing, and rolling resistance. The hardest part was honestly when I hopped on the 3T with 36cm wide bars after 2 hours on 760mm wide bars... It felt really odd. |

Good on ya. I might’ve put the single speed in third position, at the risk of reducing the stupid …
