Keas are a large intelligent parrot on the South island of New Zealand. Given a chance they will pull of the rubber from around your windshield, your wiper blades and generally pull off whatever they can.
We only saw one while we were there, a very cool bird.

A bit misleading as that isn't a carbon wheel- Mavic Elite CXR 60. It's a foam fairing bonded to an alloy rim. That model was an OEM option from Mavic. It was a very inexpensive option for builders to spec. It used "Blackcell Flange" closed cell foam. There was no actual carbon fiber like on the Cosmic or other CXR wheels.

Obviously, the bird needed more fiber.

Figured this was the case but couldn't recall who made a wheel with foam as a fairing vs. carbon. Thanks!

They made a series of wheels with fairings, I recall. The aluminum box rim (Open Pro?) is underneath the foam. They were an interesting experiment but sort of a stupid design.

The bird is cute. It's doing the bike's owner a favor -- new wheel day is coming.

So for those of us who haven't, and have no idea what's going on in the pics, could you please explain what we're looking at? Thanks.

I seem to recall that marmots get in the underside and munch on the hoses and electrical system.

Edit: Marmots, not ground squirrels

Interesting, thanks. I would not have thought to wrap my vehicle with chicken wire to help possibly prevent that from happening.

It's clearly been too long since I parked overnight at an alpine trail head. So that's what those furry buggers are doing while I'm not seeing them during a hike ...

sure sucks to get back into your 'ru after a gnar F&L peak binge ready to get some hot food and a shower just to find out your brake and electrical lines have been chewed through
