I watched this episode last night; got me to thinking that maybe I could also up my cool factor by changing my name to Justin.

It appears that rec.bicycles.tech is still alive, and some of the old-timers are still posting there: https://groups.google.com/g/rec.bicycles.tech.

I believe that what drove people away from the cycling newsgroups wasthe lack of moderation. I started to tune out after too many endless threads about politics and helmets.

Not to worry. Life is a circle. That which is cool becomes uncool but in time is cool once again. Kind of like panel paint on bike frames, vintage bikes and Eroica Gran Fondos.

rec.bicycles.racing was great.

rec.food.beer (or something like that) was similarly great.

Have enjoyed meeting many people in real life from both here and from VSalon.
Paceline has ultimately proven to be the most effective of the half-dozen big ones.
Totally agree the format in traditional forums are much more easily searchable.

I've never learned to use Instagram, see some music I like and it just moves in in 15 seconds.

I also use this forum (and others) on a real laptop, not cell phone. How can people see those tiny letters and pictures?

Oh well, I am well on the back 9 so won't matter

My general rule is: Do I do it, wear it, watch it, or read it? Then it may have been cool once, but not anymore.

Exactly!

I think reddit is very good for more immediate things, i.e. news discussions, sports, etc where new things happen frequently and you don't need to go digging back to see an expert post on how to repack hubs or adjust a BB etc.
