The premise being that we can't use our own bodies for locomotion. Obesity is ever increasing and our lack of willingness to move ourselves is part of the reason.
Walking is great exercise and I love it after a day sitting in my workspace. |

I get it and I don't disagree but I think that's the wrong comparison. The point they would be making is that for most people the choice is e bike or no bike

it's got to get a lot harder to drive to really make this comparison. Otherwise, the escalators are cars

Driving's easy, its the parking that's hard.
Its at least a factor in my daily decision whether to drive or bike to the station. Nobody worries about parking the escalator |

They could have broken down the people in the photo better, I think.
I happen to be in DC again this week. I'm here 6-8 times every year. Largely as a result of the Metro (I think), the "stand right, walk left" rule on escalators is very well observed here, both on the up and down escalators. I almost always use the left side, and am also a 2-steps-at-a-time climber. The only time I won't use the left side of the escalator is if stairs are also an option, and the escalator is so jam-packed as to allow no walking. In short, I use the escalator not to avoid the exertion of climbing, but merely to save time. So (tongue firmly planted in cheek) I think the correct breakdown of the people in the photo, for the purpose of the analogy, is:

That photo explains why people are fat and why we consume more power (electricity, fossil, etc) than necessary.

I looked at this post before having my coffee and couldn’t figure out for the life of me why anyone would need an ebike to ride that staircase.
