A quarter?

Does anyone carry a quarter in your seat bag just in case you need to make a call from a pay phone?

stop!

they are still ALL over NYC. there is one right outside my office building actually.

i do miss the days of payphones actually. i wish they were more widespread still, but to R3's point above, they are very few and far between these days, and carrying a quarter hoping you will run across one if you need it is a dangerous assumption.

They're still prevalent in NYC because of the value they deliver as outdoor ad inventory. Few other places have the foot traffic density to warrant maintaining the investment.

Seems pretty unlikely that in the places one is least likely to have mobile service there will be a pay phone. That said, I really enjoyed this 99% Invisible episode (believe me, it's relevant to the thread)

I carry a $20 in my seatbag in case I run across an awesome cash-only food truck. Cell phone for emergencies, sometimes.

So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

I keep cash in the bag for this reason as well as for use as a tire boot.

Is this in case I ride my bike through a rift in the space/time continuum, travel into the past and need to make a call to some quantum mechanics expert so I can get home?

You'd probably have a better chance running across a passerby with a cell phone than finding a pay phone.
