10mm rear thru axle?

Just picked up a set of Vision Metron 55 SL disc wheels. Checked them out, everything seemed good. Got home to install them and the rear axle won't fit. It's not an end cap thing, the inner diameter is the same thru it. Seems to be 10mm.

What do I do with these?

That was my thought. It's not a thru axle. It's a skewer that tightens like a normal bolt and nut instead of a cam mechanism.

Except the front is a normal 12mm thru axle. What sort of bike would have thru axle front, bolt rear?

This is not a rare thing to find, but seen less often now than in the last few years.

A bike with a thru axle fork and QR rear? That's not entirely uncommon especially if the prior owner got a TA fork aftermarket.

I have to think you're just a set of endcaps away from what you need.

to echo others, it's possible that you're endcaps away from what you need, possibly an axle swap away. The wheels may have come with them if bought new aftermarket. if they came on a bike originally, then the parts may not have made it to you. If they were specced on a bike and bought used or as takeoffs, then it's technically possible that they're an OEM wheel that's different than the aftermarket wheel.

10mm through axles do exists, though they're not horribly uncommon. It's also possible that it's setup for X12, which is a funky thing syntace made and some people adopted.

best bet might be contact Vision/FSA with serial of the wheel ready to tell them and they can look it up and give more info

Outside of homebrew front fork upgrades. New Cannondale SuperSix/CAAD12 discs are still TA front QR rear.

Thanks for all the help!

X12 should still be a 12mm diameter. I will play with the hubs more but it doesn't appear to be just an end caps thing, it is ~10mm the entire width of the hub.

Found out that it was indeed run on a Cannondale that had 12mm front, QR rear, so the previous owner probably set it to thru bolt. Time to track if that conversion can be undone.

An update with a fix, since I hate finding threads with no solutions to a problem.

Customer support at Vision were able to get me a 12mm rear kit. Conversion was super easy, just needed some 15 and 17mm wrenches (one bit was thin enough to need cone wrenches) to unscrew an endcap. Old axle popped right out, new one slid right in and screwed securely.
