What to do with this 86 Raleigh Grand Prix?

I had one of these in 87. had been looking for an adequate condition copy of it. Long story short original wheels are shot.
So do I put the left over 7800 parts I have on it or try to find a decent 6speed wheelset?
Where do I get an old wheelset?
Just checking.

Sea Mist and Boysenberry are the Miami Vice color way.

I’ve always liked that paint scheme.

7800 would be awesome on there. Especially if it is a downtube shifter group.

My first real bike! Loved that thing.

A set of A23s or Quills (Quills are better rims) in silver with vintage hubs would look great. Finding a rear hub might be a PITA, but you could always get it cold set out to 130 rear spacing.

Mine too. Then I got another one and rode it until it died.

If the hubs are still good but the rims are shot, rebuild the wheels.

I think it may be not worth the aggravation to find replacement wheels.

You could upgrade the bike for current drivetrains if you don't mind the expense. I think that would look cool and retro. I don't know what level tubing is on the frame-that would give me a better idea what components would be worth hanging on that frame.

Frame sticker just below seatpost junction indicates Reynolds 531 steel butted tube, assuming the paint job is original and the stickering legit. Diagonal numeral suggests butted main tubes and seat stays, and possibly fork blades.

In my world this is a bike to ride and consider, rather than sniff and discard. Is it a good size? Can replacement wheels be easily sourced, and cheaply? Are there any repairs might be needed?

Same here, but mine was a 1970 or 71. Red with black panels. In high school I wanted a Gitane but the Raleigh was a bit less money. Our bikes were kept in an unattached garage and someone stole all the kids bikes except mine, which was locked up. I gloated for a while but the thieves came back with bolt cutters and stole mine! I then got a Gitane Interclub so I was able to step up a bit. Ah, memories.

It looks like a remod candidate.
It's one of the cleaner 86 GPs I've looked at.
I have most of the DA 7800 group.
Now I need to find those DA 10 speed downtube shifters.
Thanks

Nice!

If it were old probably pair the shifters with the brake levers that are already on the bike.

A 10s indexing unit from a right side 7900 DT lever will fit in any Dura Ace DT lever from 7400 forward, without any modification.

I have a spare 10s indexing unit leftover from an 11s DT conversion if you can find 74xx or 7700 levers.

Here’s a 7401 shifter upgraded to 10s.
