ot: RIP Li Wenliang

Dr. Li is the ophthalmologist who tried to sound the alarm about novel coronavirus and was forcibly silenced by local Chinese authorities. He died yesterday of the disease, leaving behind a small child and a wife who is pregnant.

“Heroes don’t fall from the sky. They’re just ordinary people who stepped forward.”

He deserved much more than the public humiliation he was subjected to.

What a tragedy.

It is tragic and a shame. The only silver lining I can see is that death caused the outrage of the public, demanding the communist party to stop with the information blockade. It is amazing to see that people are speaking out online and that China can't shut everyone off.

Ya mean 'we' as in the US government? Stopping a blockade of information of another sovereign nation? As in what Russia tried to do with the 2016 election?

If he had not sounded off, and the chinese gov were allowed to be just a little later in responding, the people of Wuhan and Hubei would have traveled for chinese new year and the mess would be uncontainable by now.

World really dodged a bullet.

No, world definitely dodged a bullet. no matter how bad it gets, if the good Doctor had said nothing, millions of people would have traveled to and from Wuhan/Hubei to all parts of China and the world. The whole of China would look like Hubei and probably every large tourist city popular with the Chinese for New Year- London, New York, Singapore, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Sydney, Tokyo etc would have infections. They shut the gates to the city at the last moment. A few days delayed, .....you have an exponentially worse situation.

You can take for example the Japanese Tour Bus Driver and Guide who happen to have a busload of tourists from Wuhan. When they became ill, instead of thinking it a cold or flu, they thought Coronavirus and immediately sought help. Minimizing secondary infections......

The Government should award the doctor the Medal of the Republic which is the highest honour they can bestow.

Give a prestigious award to a national hero and humanitarian, what a novel idea in these times...
