Bernhard Rohloff passed away
according to the company website, biking techology pioneer Bernhard Rohloff passed away May 19th at the age of 73. Bernhard had suffered from Parkinsons disease.
Bernhard Rohloff was the master mind behind the revered SLT99 chain which helped start his business, and later for the design of the "Speedhub" internal 14-gear hub in 1996, which is still in the market more than 25 years later.

Bummer. Those hubs have a lot of cool engineering in them - they’ve always been on my lust list.
He was a pioneer for sure - RIP ! |

The story is he had that idea for a better shifting chain and designed an automatic machine to build it, as a one man enterprise with his wife. He almost went bancrupt because it took so long to get all the parts for the machine made and sort the function out. Then he started making chains in his garage which were so smooth that within a year Campagnolo bought them to ship with their first 8 speed drive train.
