As others wrote, even if it sounds sappy, just "pay it forward": reciprocate the LBS's gesture (especially since LBS's are having a hard enough time as it is) by giving the certificate to a friend/neighbor/young rider that you, a friend, or even the LBS staff knows.
You do a good deed; the LBS does a good service; the recipient has a good experience. Good will is great currency. |

been so long since I've been in a shop, not sure how far $50 would go.
couple of rolls of bar tape or some tubes and CO2 carts. a single tire maybe...? |

I’d do this. There is a local bike repair/recycle place that fixes up bikes and gets local folks in need on them. It would be a huge luxury for them to be able to pick out something they needed that was new and spiffy.

I was hoping to reply to this thread with what I got (I especially like the park tool wine opener suggestion!), but when I went to the store today, I realized they had completely rebranded as basically a Trek and Specialized store. Gone were the parts and tool section, and at least 90% of the store was high-end bikes, with the remainder being shoes, apparel, and cycling computers.
I’m clearly no longer the market for this store as I prefer to build and work on my own bikes. I left without purchasing anything, because I am currently not and probably won’t be in the market for a $5000 trek. I think I’ll probably just donate this gift card to someone who is looking to make a bike purchase. That said, I’m not sure I know anybody with that type of money either. |

100% I would donate the gift card back to the LBS to be given to a family making a new bike purchase and using the $50 gift card towards the purchase of a helmet...big fan of using helmets!
