New size shimano BB?

I just received a new dura ace BB in the mail, and I see the cups look much smaller than before. Is this a new thing?? Is there a specific new tool out for these? Frustrating....

This changed almost 10 years ago whenever DA9000 came out, the BBs used to always come with a plastic adapter to fit in the old tool but that seems to be hit or miss any more. There's a second size for the Ultegra/105 SM-BBR60 BB as well. Your local bike shop probably has a stack of them lying around, or you can get a tool like this Abbey that does both: https://www.abbeybiketools.com/produ...bracket-socket

No, it's been that way for quite a while. You need a round plastic outer removal ring to remove it. Thought it was supplied w/bb, but maybe not. Others will surely post a pic of it. You don't use that open wrench to install/remove these bb's.

That's a pretty crappy BB tool, time for an upgrade!

Totally worth having a nice, well fitting tool for outboard BB cups.

The Wolf Tooth tools are pretty nice.

Uggh OK thanks.
It def did not come with an adapter, but I bought it from Merlin UK and came in a plastic bag, not original packaging.

Would a park 16 notch tool work (seeing those on their website...)?

If someone could post a pic of the adapter mentioned, that would be great, thanks!!

You should subscribe to Abbey Tools BB standard of the Month club.

Here is the Ultegra/DA combo tool.

The Plastic adapter with smaller BB for me has same old tool now into a new amortizing life window. Beauty now is the metal tool does not touch the metal BB.

Should came with the BB as said.

Shimano TLFC25 Adapt Install Tool

First gen BBs DID come with the insert. Merlin UK, OEM resale, not surprised you didn't get one.

No

Below...Geee, I could mention that shimano pioneered external BB cups, with specific spline patterns, that everybody else adopted...Then changed it...and then again for ultegra/105..I could mention it, but I won't.

Reminds me of the old Shimano headset "standard".

I have one of those still in use. At least they made it so you could use the common size headset wrench. I never got the wrench with notches.

that kind of tool is very useful for centerlock brake lock rings.

I wish it came in Shimano blue

I have a park tool for the newer style Shimano BB and the blue anodization is an ugly color that almost wants to be purple. You'd think they could get blue right, since they have it trademarked for tools

It's funny, i just went through this. The tool you need has a nominal 41mm diameter. The other one i think is 44mm diameter.

FWIW, I did get several of those adapters from BBs from Merlin that I ordered back in 2015 or 2016, even though they did not come in retail packaging.

I did not get an adapter from a newer BB, ordered from BikeTiresDirect in 2021, even though that came in full retail packaging.

I think Shimano just stopped including them, figuring everyone had them by now. Even though those things are pretty cheap, no need to generate extra plastic waste.

Not a new bb standard. Just a different external cup size so the tool is different.

There already is...this happened in 2012, with the release of Shimano 11 speed.
