My wife is currently doing a bike and barge trip with some girl friends through Belgium and Holland. She's loving the current exchange rate but I'm afraid she's going to spend the family fortune.

If you have time, it pays to get another credit card or that checking account with Schwab.

The exchange rate one gets stateside is pretty horrendous. Last time I exchanged for Euros stateside, the bank did a 7.5% mark-up over the exchange rate. And it gets even worse at the airport (I think the mark-up was more along the lines of 15%).

Even if you don't go the options mentioned, it would still be better to pay a 3% transaction fee on credit card than a 7.5% mark-up.

What are some good UK based cycling retailers that let you pay in GBP?

I just bought a crankset from bike24 in Germany. Was 282.50 euros and came through on my CC statement as a little over 279 usd. Just shy of $100 less than the best price I could find in the US.

If you want a giggle on how screwed UK is here, I just order something from Sweden. I was told by the company post-Brexit I might be hit with VAT and customs duties from UK authorities. My vat and customs surcharge ended up costing approximately an additional 30%. When it rains, it pours.

I was eyeing up a Mason Definition and the price is looking great with the currency conversion.

Finally ordered something from Extralight with favorable exchange. Used my CC with no transaction fees paid in euro through PayPal. Sent €76.21, credit card showed $75.11.

PayPal exchange on the other hand. If you decide to not pay in euro their exchange rate was $0.97. So as long as you have a decent credit card without exchange fees you are better off paying in euro.
