again, I highly recommend you guys that a look at this youtube video. It is kinda cocktail napkin-ish in the most intellectual way but it drives these points home in a very understandable way.
Yep - Had a look at that last night. It's really very good. Thanks!

wow, my mind is at ease knowing David is okay on his yacht. It's a bit like the Investment Banker isolating in Hawaii and complaining because he has to get up at 2 a.m. to keep up with his east coast co-workers.

This paper and it's follow-up are not fully up-to-date, but I find a lot of the analysis on the historical perspective of the pandemic to be very enlightening, particularly some of the analysis of the Imperial College paper that seems to be driving a lot of the response to COVID-19 in many places. This is just FYI. Take from it what you will, and ignore the rest.....

Incredibly irresponsible.

Out of interest, from someone who has zero knowledge in this area.....why do people automatically assume there will be a vaccine for this? Is there some sort of guarantee that they can develop one?? Sorry if this was already discussed somewhere earlier in this thread!

The all too familiar story of maximizing profit, eliminating competition with buyouts, and subsequent severe national ventilator shortage...

... ain't big business grand?

The evening news has had stories of two companies who believe that they have both created a vaccine, but of course it takes many months of testing to prove effectiveness and safety. With any luck it may be in next year's flu shot, whose formulation changes from year to year.

I'd rather be optimistic than pessimistic about it.

No guarantee but they did a lot of work for the original SARS-Cov virus in 2002/2003. They have several candidates they think will work, but there is no active SARS pools in the human population now so are unable to conduct Phase 2 trials.

They will not include the first vaccine in the flu shot. Once the CDC has a viable candidate or candidates they start phase 2 trials with, they will begin discussions with manufacturers about producing a stockpile before the drug is approved. If the vaccine proves viable, they can immediate use the stockpile. If the vaccine proves ineffective, the stockpiles is burned and the manufacturer reimbursed by the government. It'd be a huge waste of resources to include it with a flu shot and potentially introduce many other uncontrolled variables.

20 women? darn!!!!... what is going to suck for him is that if he is old as hell he is not going to have too much fun

The other part that could be a problem if the hotel personell starts getting sick and going home, in that case the sucker will be there alone with 20 women.

Either way, some guys live in another world.

Jan Heine argues for wearing a mask in public: https://www.renehersecycles.com/covi...ing-face-masks.

Quote:
You may wonder: Why did we get such strongly worded recommendations not to wear masks in the first place? There were two apparent reasons:
  • There is a shortage of masks, and the message that masks are ineffective was intended to prevent people from buying precious stocks. (They are needed for front-line health care workers.) That backfired, and hopefully, those responsible have learned the lesson that transparency is the best policy.
  • Officials worried about the economic impact of the crisis. Just a few weeks ago, Seattle’s mayor complained that news of the outbreak were scaring away tourists. People wearing masks would have been an very visible reminder that the virus was already spreading in our community. In hindsight, that might have been good. It might have create a sense of urgency that was lacking during the early days of the pandemic.
I don't generally wear a mask when I go outside, but I do when I'm shopping, whether indoors or outdoors at a farmers market.

NYC cases are about a quarter of all cases in U.S., and deaths are increasing rapidly.

https://gothamist.com/news/coronavir...-over-24-hours

Quote:
Between Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m., 222 people died in NYC from the novel coronavirus, according to statistics released by the NYC Department of Health, for a total of 672 fatalities. That's nearly triple the number of deaths from COVID-19 documented during the previous 24-hour period, when 84 coronavirus deaths were counted in NYC.
