PSA: Counterfeit $100 bill scams on the rise

These are getting more common. Just had someone try it on me for the third time this year and I don't even sell much.

The scam usually revolves around getting change after buying a small item, but can happen on larger items as well.

If a $100 bill doesn't have the plastic/holographic blue line - the most modern design - it is quite often a fake.

They can make some very convincing fakes of the older bills. Be careful!

Theory- maybe because of so much digital payment, some become less familiar with the genuine article.

I'm disappointed. Seeing this in Classifieds, I assumed it would be a PSA for where to get counterfeit $100 bills.

Be on the lookout for fraudulent charges on cards too. Apparantly I just bought an iPad air for someone in Californua and Christmas tree. Credit card company indicated stolen credit card info on the rise.

We had one of our cards get hacked this past spring. The credit card company called us and left a message. I don't trust any kind of message left from card companies etc so I called the CS number on the back of my card. It turned out that someone in the middle of the country was trying to buy about 2k worth of NASCAR stuff.

At work we take bail payments in cash or card. Last year we had someone come in to pay bail on a drug case. the bail amount was just shy of 40k and these people came with CASH! We had 3 different supervisors count, recount, and use the counterfit detection markers over the money. Shocker was that it was all legit and not 1 counterfit bill.

I tried printing some $20 bills on my printer a couple years ago; no problem. I was stunned at the quality.

Why?

Tip: To protect against craigslist scams/robbery, etc. print copies of your bills prior to the meetup. Should something unkind happen, you'll have the S/Ns of the bills that the PD may be able to trace to the seller.

Recently I tried the same thing; the new printer recognizes them as dollar bills and refuses to copy them.

As to the $100 bill scams; they won't affect me- I don't carry such small bills.
