My Dad was there for three tours...officer even...died in 2001 from cancer via agent orange poisoning...I had to fight like hell with the VA to get his widow more money for that via combat related payoffs...they did eventually after much fury from my side...lot more going on with that war and our policies than what's shown in the movies, even the decent ones...

Guys just chill about Velotel not serving in Vietnam. He said it was a hernia discovered on his pre-induction physical. He never said he tried to get out of the draft-he was lucky the army doctor found a hernia that kept him from serving. I was also lucky in that I had a very high draft number and the draft was slowing down so I was also lucky. I’m grateful for those that served and those that serve now. War sucks.

His post is so much more than that.

Er ... Nixon sabotaged peace talks to aid his election campaign and only ended the war when it was clear we had lost.

On topic - I dig velotel’s style and enjoyed this contribution of his.

It was clear we had 'lost' in 1968...After the Tet Offensive. Further evidenced by the 2nd large invasion in 1972..BUT, yes, Nixon was a slimeball, surrounded by slimeballs(dejavu all over again!!), he did things that sacrificed young Americans but did indeed get us out of that quagmire. Hung the South Vietnamese out to dry, many died in the 3rd large invasion of the South in 1975.

Actually, as bad as that was, the reminder actually makes me feel better. When things appear worse than they have ever been in politics we have to recall we have been here before and, somehow, survived as a country. Here's hoping...

I don't know....I, of course, sure hope you're right, but I am not optimistic. I'm old enough to have missed the Viet Nam war draft by a month, but I sure have never seen anything like the 'when things appear worse than they have ever been' as they are now....

That comment is out of line. We are better than this here on our little Internet forum.
