Blame Dan Gurney. He started it all in 1967.

I once took a tennis ball in the eye, which broke my eyeball. (I still have the bluish scar, 40+ years later.) Filled with blood. Put me in the hospital, twice. Fortunately my sight was saved. It's serious.

Heal well, Bini. And go for the Tour!!!!

TIL: somebody removes the wire cage over the cork before the podium ceremony. I guess saving the 5 seconds it takes to unwrap the wire is critical for TV or something.

Unbelievably reckless. How was this not an obvious outcome?

Which would actually be fine as it's somewhat of a silly tradition and the alcohol association is kind of pointless at this point. Alcohol and success in the sport really don't go together at all in any kind of logical way. It's probably more marketing for the liquor companies at this point.

It's equally silly in motorsports as we don't need anything to reinforce alcohol + motor vehicles any more than alcohol + bicycles.

I got the impression from earlier in the thread this tradition isn't even that old.. if they weren't doing it back in the day when no one really knew how bad alcohol was and riders might even drink wine during a long day than it's not really that important today when we know no amount is healthy and no amount is compatible with maximum fitness/performance/recovery.

Agree. Popping bottles is silly. Try another beverage?

The Indy 500 winner traditionally celebrates on the podium by drinking milk:

But just like celebrating with champagne for other sports, the answer to why drinking milk became a tradition at Indy is "follow the money". If something is presented to the winner on the podium, you can be sure it is because somebody is paying for the exposure of their product. It is not unusual for purveyors to want to associate their products with winners/winning, and I'm certain that Champagne sellers pay a lot for product placement in sports, movies, etc.

Somewhere a Prosecco representative is cringing at your use of "Champagne" for an Italian product.

More the French who get territorial about the use of the name.

It does sound more ceremonial than sparkling wine though.
