I don’t fb much, but I do follow a weldporn site on there. Everyone needs a little weldporn in their life, right? You just can’t look at it too much or you’ll go blind.

Nice!
Forgot the pro peloton update: some people won, most lost; plenty of people are sick; some did all 3. I've started watching Paul Brodie's YT channel: bicycles and motorcycles, lots of fabrication with some welding. |

May 2022
May 2022
Shimano never invented anything, but they sure did improve a lot of stuff. For this they should be shunned and reviled. Thank goodness for the internet. Meanwhile, Campagnolo embarked on “an exciting new chapter”. This turned out to be #DreamBigger, which made me think that Melania Trump is now running their social media campaign. As a followup, Campy came out with a set of gravel wheels, which were met with the typical range of responses from ecstasy to indifference to derision. One thing's for sure - Paceline is reliably inconsistent in its response to new products. Tungsten putty or lead strips? If ya don't know, ya don't know. Rob English makes incredibly beautiful/ugly functional/useless bikes. We're absolutely certain of this. We have no idea how many gears we need, for any type of cycling, under any circumstances, except for those who are absolutely certain. I sure wish I was one of them. Remember back in April when tubeless tires were exploding? Now they're burping. Imagine Homer Simpson riding Paris-Roubaix on a Schwinn Stingray, complete with chopper bars, banana seat, and a musette full of cream filled donuts, belching all the way, like some sort of cycling nightmare with Homer replacing Santa Claus and a red headlight on the Stingray. Anyway, whether your tubeless tires explode, burp, or fart, you can end up with a humiliating amount of sealant on your Rapha shorts in all the wrong places. In the cycling community, this is called "progress". As proof of its success, I offer the fact that it pushed the usual rim/disc brake and tubed/tubeless tire spats to the far and lonely pages of Paceline, but it took professional cyclists riding at top speed over large cobbles on carbon rims with completely flat tires to do so. (braaaaaap!) A scam artist took a bunch of cyclists and many other people for a ride (yes, that’s a rather sour pun), but was finally caught. He touted himself as ex-military, ex-pro cyclist, CFO, CEO, bike shop owner, and firearms instructor. Then Eroica California 2022 turned out to be a bit of a scam - inaccurate maps, no water, little food, and medals from 2020. Was this just his latest gig? Coincidence? You decide. If your bike chatters, get fatter tires. Or use your last cream filled donut as extra sealant, simultaneously softening the ride. If my bike chatters, I check the derailleur alignment and tell myself to toughen up. Matej Mohoric rode all 257km of Paris-Roubaix with no tape on the tops of his handlebars, and he finished in fifth place. He probably would have been on the podium if he had forsworn gloves. You should kill your lawn before your zero turn mower kills you. Upcountry is purely awesome. tommyrod74 saw a carbon Serotta sipping a lemonade at Trader Joe’s. And its paint was perfect. While discussing how to ship handlebars, a minor spat broke out about diaper boxes. Really. Some cycling topics are a disaster looking for a forum. Paceline is their destination.

Top marks. I don’t know if May was more interesting than April on PL, your powers of distillation improved, or both, but I’m really looking forward to next month’s edition.
I’m enjoying the mental image of a cream-filled donut attached to a Presta valve. |
