LBS Doing it right in 2020: BMC
Good blog post by Mike V or Black Mountain Cycles.
Tells it like it is, and a good example of how todays small business has to keep adapting. https://blackmtncycles.com/2020-new-year-renewed-focus/

Mike V. is rad and I wish him much success in the new year. I understand the gamble on new road frames but the Molteni color has often been the only thing holding me back from getting one! Maybe I’ll buy one and have it blasted and powder coated.

Can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve with the new prototype he mentioned.
Mike is super nice to work with and I wish him all the best. We'll be in his neck of the woods in August and I can't wait to meet him in person. Love his bikes. Loads of value/performance. |

FYI - I'm not the Mike V from BMC.
I thought it was funny when I saw my name a couple of times. I have been thinking of getting one of his frames. I missed out one someone selling one my size at a bargain here recently. I think it was for the better. Seeing what the other Mike V blogged about makes me want to go buy one from him. It will be a good chance to meet him and talk about a mutual friend we have in common. |

Indeed. Doing it "right" in the sense that he is doing what works for him in his situation.
Adapt or perish. I'll buy a bike from him at some point just because. |

My first response: I really, really liked the guy. If I hadn't sworn of buying bikes, I'd purchase a frame from him on the basis of his blog post alone.
I liked that he wasn't afraid that, since "everyone is his potential customer, it's best to offend no one." Exhibit A: his little Airbnb rant. I've actually been an Airbnb host, as has my partner. But I really liked that he stated his viewpoint, politics be damned. And I dug the Coltrane reference. He'd be a great addition to this site. Very few vendors have the guts to get "in the arena" and mix it up in the non-bike realm. Kudos to him. |

I had a great experience buying from Mike - and I hope someday I do get to ride by his shop, listen to a record, and buy some schwag, whether I need it or not..

Interesting and sounds a lot like Vecchio's..in terms of things like hours and pricing and carrying the 'essentials', the things that sell recognizing you can't be everything to everybody...since Vecchio's continues to be a destination, lots of Vecchio's branded 'stuff'..
BUT retail in general way tough, bicycle retail tough in spades. Daily episodes of 'but on this website', type stuff.. 'Do one thing and do it well'.....comes to mind. Side note, every time I see or hear 'BMC', I think of the below tho..not BlackMountainCycles..not good, methinks.
