Wheelset build suggestion? 5800 to DT R460

Ben's has a good deal going..20% off on everything, free labor on wheel builds..
I spec'd out:

32/32 Shimano 5800 105 11spd hubs
DT Swiss R460 rims
Sapim Race spokes

a bit heftier than I wanted (something like 18xx g) but also cost me $260 shipped to my door.
Thoughts? Can I do any better for under $300?

I don't think so. I had a set of chorus hubs laced to dt 460 rims with sapim spokes and I love the wheels.

TBH I'm not a weight weenie, I don't race and want a durable setup...so this seems reasonable..

I'm riding a set just like this from oldpotatoe.

They ride well. Even if the build quality is equal to free, you've saved enough to buy roger musson's wheel building book.

Do pull the hubs apart and rebuild with marine grease before you go out in the slop.

I actually own the book. No longer have my wheel building stand...
These are handbuilt wheels from Ben's - don't know how well they build wheels but I'm sure they're good. Worst case have my LBS go over them

A friend suggested H+Son Archetypes - they're a bit heavier but 23mm width vs the DT's 22mm. Will this really make a difference? I feel like 22mm is wide enough?

I'll be using 38mm tires but the frame can fit 42+

Probably not because no labor or shipping charged, basically low retail on parts only. ...BUT, I'd have a competent wheelbuilder check true, round, tension and stress relieve these before riding..

For right above..Archetypes are great rims but also more expensive, welded seam, etc..also NOT tubeless ready either if that's yer gig..

I wanted a wheelset closer to 1500g, but that does not seem possible with the Shimano 105 hubs and 32/32 drilling. I don't think I can do any better from Ben's. The Ultegra hubs are just a tad-bit lighter but not really that much (20g difference in the rear, maybe?).
I don't think I want to use alloy nipples either

You'd need lighter hubs and rims to get to that 1500g range and more $ for sure. Alloy nipps and thin, fewer spokes don't reduce the whole gig much if you want reliability, which means a heavier rim..PLUS 5800/6800 hubs are 32 or 36h only. For that $, a great wheelset..like I mentioned, I'd have a decent wheelbuilder check them..

Remember a liter of water weighs over 2 pounds and you and your bike, that package weighs maybe in the 85,000 or so gram range so I would fret over 300 grams..

Totally agree.
This is just a great deal given they're not charging labor, free shipping..and the 20% off code helps.

The little weight savings do add up..

The wheelset I was looking at prior to is Bike Hub Store (or Bitex) hubs laced to R460 or Kinlin rims which is closer to 15xx g due to also going 28/32.

I had a pair of the r460 laced to miche race box hubs 32/32 with sapim spokes built by Old Potatoe and they were used on my all road bike over all kinds of terrain. They are a good reliable all around wheelset.

1500g is can be a difficult weight to reach with handbuilt alloys IMO.

Most decent rims are around the 450g mark.

Of course, you can use less spokes and alloy nipples, but less than 28 only really works if you're light, plus brass nipples are just a bit safer if you like to neglect your bike.

The only real option is superlight hubs which are expensive, and CX ray spokes, which are also expensive.
