SRAM AXS Road Shifters: Mech Rim vs Hydro Reach/Length Comparison?
I have a bike fit question between SRAM AXS mechanical rim brake shifters vs. hydro shifters. All else being equal on a bike fit (ie - stem and handlebar stack/reach), would you be in the exact position between the mechanical and hydro shifters? Or are one set of shifters "longer" than the other?

I don’t have any idea about rim brake shifters (people still ride these???) but I can tell you that with all else being equal, there’s a difference between Rival AXS and Force AXS hood size and position.

I've asked a similar question about Di2 vs AXS reach. I was told the premium version of BikeCAD has this data, so you might be able to find a friendly framebuilder who could give you accurate figures.

The hydro are definitely Wider, bulkier and have taller knob. I don’t think they are a lot longer, maybe a couple mm, but that difference if any can be made up for through handlebar or stem selection if necessary. That said there’s a reason Whisky, Specialized and others are now offering bars with 65-68 mm reach and it’s to account for the honking hugeness of hydro shifters.

I’ve been struggling with the same thing for Shimano Ultegra r8000 mechanical vs hydraulic hoods.
I have set my two bike up identically, same bars, reach to the flats, bar angle, drop, stem and saddle. But something is off on the rim bike, I especially notice it when trying to get in flat forearms aero position on the hoods, feels cramped at that point vs the disc bike as the hood knobs are so small. I’m playing with the idea of a slightly longer stem, slightly higher bars to adjust for this, but it’ll surely mess up my fit in other positions. |
