I'm gathering a few bits and bobs in preparation to build up a 585 Ultra. At the bottom bracket where the front der cable passes up through the frame, was there a frame-specific grommet for that hole? Or do you just use a short piece of cable liner/sleeve there? I don't like the idea of naked wire rubbing on carbon, but as I've not yet started the build IDK if that will actually be a problem.

It takes a length of housing liner.

I have never had a problem there and haven't used a liner. No specific grommet needed but I'm sure a liner won't hurt either. I don't think my cable rubs on the carbon - it clears the hole walls with no rubbing AFAIK.

And even if it did, on my ~ 2006 era 585, the tunnel thru the BB for the FD cable is lined with what appears to be an aluminum tube... this (terrible quality) magnified pic is from the topside.

My NOS 585 optimum came with one black 'cable liner' in place. For the small amount of money to buy a few, I placed the rear derailleur cable in one and through the bottom bracket cable guide as well. It seemed a tiny pittance for added protection. It came in a translucent white color.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a similar VXR/VXRS appreciation/lust thread….

I am fortunate to have both a 585 and a VXR. They are both outstanding bikes in my opinion.

You all have good taste. For what it's worth, I've been on the hunt for a good 585 to purchase. Most Google searches lead right to this forum.

I've been reading a lot here, so I figured I should sign up and try to participate a little.

I certainly would not object to more 585 photos...

I’ll be listing a medium tangerine 585 frameset shortly. Pm me if interested.

Among the sweetest riding bike I've swung a leg over, no question...

OK, Scott, if you don't get that XXL 585 Ultra frame built up soon, you're going to have to ship it back to me. Statute of limitations says you have to send it back if not built up ASAP.
