AXS Battery Spare/Replacement

The last post I came across (last year) suggested some people were experimenting with non-sram AXS batteries. Just wondering if the monetary savings have been worth it?

it's really hard to know

cuz as far as I know there is no way to tell the condition of the battery. I have three batteries for my 1x. One on the bike and two in my jersey pocket...just in case. I rotate the knock off among the three and don't pay any attention to which works better or longer.

I mix and match non-sram and sram batteries on my bike. Honestly, battery life seems kind of erratic, but I don't know this any differences between the branded and unbranded ones. Maybe somebody has done some more scientific testing, but I can't think of a reason to pay more for The sram brand.

Do you want good battery life, go di2. As long as you're charging them all the time anyway, might as well save some money.

I've used some off-brand ones and they've been OK. SRAM's battery prices are pretty spendy at $60/ea.

These batteries are very low capacity anyways, a rechargeable AAA has 3x the capacity, so I don't think SRAM is using any sort of specialty battery tech in them.

There are also some replacements that are smaller profile - nice for AXS droppers and increased tire clearance at the FD.

I have a couple of off brand batteries. I don't think they last as long. Always carry a spare and keep it in the rotation.

I have the MRX brand. Probably worth $20 or two for $34 on Amazon.

I have AXS across 4 different bikes and use SRAM and generic batteries. I can't tell the difference between them, but out of the 3 generics I have 1 of them bit the dust quickly and would no longer charge. The other 2 seem to work as well as the SRAM ones.

After posting this I got curious about the battery that I thought was bad. Turns out it does take a charge. The problem is it doesn't fit as firm as the SRAM batteries and the other 2 generic ones. I checked it on a different derailleur and it works fine. It just has some play when clicked into some of the derailleurs and not others. I don't have that issue with any of my SRAM batteries.

No first hand experience here since I have sram batteries, but a riding buddy of mine uses both sram and non-sram batteries on his axs and was telling me he noticed a big difference in battery life with the off brand batteries.

Surprised sram even allows non sram batteries to be made since they are so proprietary.
This is interesting

These copycat batteries and chargers do not hold up to SRAM's performance standards for capacity, safety, and reliability. Genuine SRAM parts are designed and tested with a priority on safety and optimal performance. Avoid any other manufacturer's offerings, as using them will void SRAM's warranty.
Not sure how that would be enforced.

I am pretty new to AXS, but the batteries are part of my weekly routine. I use a Scosche heart rate monitor, which is rechargeable, a rechargeable Garmin, front and rear blinkies which are rechargeable, and now, AXS. At home, I have a power strip in the garage with all the charging cords and chargers. Everything goes on at once.

How many here have had dead AXS batteries needing replacement?

Seems to me even if you have multiple AXS bikes, just get one real SRAM (15$ more) and be cheap insurance.

It's more like $40 per battery. And the degree to which it is insurance is the degree to which the SRAM batteries actually perform better, which seems to be inconclusive.

I don't mind paying a little bit more for quality, but I don't know if I would be. As I said, my experience, I don't know this and appreciable difference between them, neither last particularly long, and so it is actually more useful to have many batteries that I can rotate off and on the charger than to have a small number of batteries that might last a little bit longer, but aren't always charged and at the ready.

Three batteries for one derailleur? Is this for RAAM?

Whichever you choose, make sure you check you're not on fire after crashing.
