Rat Trap Pass tires are really really fun to ride around on cow paths, sidewalks, MUPs, single track (at my speeds), errands, etc. BUT never would I want to push them around 400 miles of a Brevet course.

Holy moly..bike tire testing almost sounds more complicated...

He’s back to troll you all again. Let’s get another 10 pages of undergrad stats, we can do this!

And! Those tire pressures are worthwhile to take note of

Wow I guess wider tires really are faster. Anyone know how the riders on 650bx48 did? Or the riders on 700cx55? Were there any at all? |

This is typical logic from JH: de Crescenzo drops everyone on a climb, and he thinks you can draw conclusions about tire width from that.

Wertz is a big dude, not exactly known as a climber. What's his w/kg at 450w?

wow.. I'm pretty sure the TdF could be won on 44mm RH tires and you all would still find a reason to talk crap about them and JH.. just amazing sometimes..

Probably still close to 5 W/kg.

Yeah. Brennan + his bike are plausibly 100kg. Lauren + her bike are plausibly 60 kg. So in w/kg, his 450 would correspond to her 270--which would be very high for a woman in a 140 mile bike race. In comparison, the QOM on Mt Diablo is 230W for 50 minutes.

My guess as well. He’s 6’5” and a former elite rower. I’d guess he’s in the 195 - 205 range. Say 90 kilos.

Don't know about tires, but that was an absolutely horrible article. I like Jan Heine's writing, usually, for its clarity. That piece was incomprehensible.
I had to check some other source to figure out that Lauren de Crescenzo did not in fact win "the race" but won the women's division, and the guy mentioned finished fourth in the men's division. I had the impression LdC won overall, which would have been both noteworthy and encouraged everyone to buy Snoqualmie tires with the Endurance casing, apparently, in whatever width a professional athlete was able to win a race with. Also unclear to me, on somewhat rugged terrain, why it's even controversial that a decently wide tire with good suspension properties is worthwhile. In all seriousness - of COURSE you'd like a little flotation there. Is anyone actually advocating for 23c tires on rocky gravel courses? |

Not really sure it does much other than make people irritated when they find out they've been mislead, but a few places are doing it. Rene Herse is chasing the same views and dollars as other dirt focused verticals so it makes sense their blog would follow the same style guide. Land acknowledgements were in the last issue of BQ I saw, what a world. Keegan Swenson who was the overall winner and #1 rider at both Leadville on Saturday and SBT Gravel on Sunday was on about the same size tires as everyone else, 38-42mm. Still waiting for our hero on larger tires to emerge, maybe one day. |
