Caad13

I’m contemplating “upgrading” my Caad10 with a new Caad13 frame (if I can find one).
Love the retro paint. But more importantly, 2 features I want are:
- Tire clearance. Cannondale says 28mm(rim brake), which is better than 25mm on the Caad10.
- Fender mounts.

The only thing I don’t like is that dropped seat stay.

Anyone have one of these? I’d guess not much different than my Caad10, as far as handling or ride quality goes.

Our local dealer has both of the retro colors in stock, they look great! Surprising to hear your CAAD10 only took 25s, mine took 28s on wide rims (so 33 actual). These are direct mount brakes, but you probably know that!

I currently have Michelin Power 700x25 on Zonda wheels. There’s maybe 2-3mm clearance. But the limiting factor is the brakes themselves, both front and rear. Wonder if DM brakes would offer more clearance.

We did a build up of one in the shop, actually was heavier than the bike it replaced when finished (Specialized Allez Sprint).

I've worked on a few, the tire clearance is good, one thing to keep an eye out for if you get one is the seatpost, I've seen excessive wear where it meets the frame, and you'll be limited to Cannondale options if you're looking to upgrade the seatpost.

I agree with you. Hate bikes with dropped seat stays, I think a love/hate thing. Beauty in the eye of beholder.

I recall that Cannondale frames had what seemed to be an incredible degree of variability in the tire clearance--even among models of the same frame from the same year.

One anecdote: I had a CAAD9 (maybe a 2005?) that cleared 30mm measured tires all day long. My buddy had the same bike, same year, and he couldn't fit 28mm tires. Weird.

Mine would do a MEASURED 28 front and rear (maybe 29-30 in the rear if I really pushed it). So that was a 25mm GP 4000s II or a 28mm GP 4 Season (but not a 28mm Gatorskin and definitely not a 28mm 4000) on a 18mm internal rim. Clearance in the fork was tighter than back and I felt ideal/safe clearance was really a 23 front and 25 rear with 4000s and that is how mine sits now.

I liked my CAAD 10 a lot. I question though would you run a CAAD with big 28s and fenders (with fenders could probably only do a 23 or 25). Or if that's what you want might you be better with something like a Synapse?

This is what I've heard/seen as well. I have a 2010 CAAD9 and a 2012 CAAD10. Both will easily clear actual, measured 28s in width, but the rear brake bridges on both bikes provides very little vertical clearance with Shimano 6800 and 9000 brakes. The tire/rim/tire pressure combinations I use are 27.5mm wide with sufficient vertical clearance at the rear brakes.

The new caads are a bit more relaxed and the new synapse allows way wider tires and I think it’s the next price point. I think of the synapse as akin to the new domane.

Same issue with me and the CAAD10.
