Is there a special tool for (Tektro) rim brake nuts?
Looking to disassemble a Tektro R580 brake.
The 14mm closed end wrench "fits" but not liking the contact points. Don't want to end up stripping anything. Is there a specific tool for this shape of a nut? |

What is the name for a nut like that and why would these be used?

Looks like a 6 point deep socket might work.

Would be interested to find out if there is indeed a special tool for this.
In the past, have ensured that any setscrew present is loosened and then used a strip of old inner tube wrapped around the nut and a pair of plumber's pliers to prevent marring the finish. It works, but...not elegant. |

Vise Grips, gently. They are usually not that tight once you loosen the set screw, as they need to be loose enough to allow the caliper to move freely.

I'm not seeing 6 spline sockets or wrenches in 13 or 14mm when I run a search.
I was thinking to wrap with tape or some layer of protection and then go at it with (careful) brute force. |

You can always reach out to TRP and ask.
Why does it need to be removed? |

14mm socket works. I used a 6pt but I’m sure 12 would work as well.

That's a mighty odd shape for a nut for this application. There might be a tool designed specifically to fit down into the scalloped cutouts. But this nut is often used when centering the brake, and that same tool wouldn't be able to fit down into the cutouts when the nut was sandwiched between the caliper and the frame/fork. You might consider replacing the nut with a standard hex nut, which would be a lot easier to use for this application.

I have a spare R556 in the drawer (replaced with a Paul Racer on the front of my Bob Jackson) and it has the same nut. I sild a 14mm socket over it and it appears that it would work sufficiently.

I just had to reposition the spring on a tektro 559 and i used vice grips lightly clamped around the nut
