Renaissance
Looking at the "Anyone own a Scarab?" thread here, I started to think about the tremendous number of excellent frame builders we have now around the world. At 70 years old, I can remember 40 or 50 years ago when you could buy a Schwinn (and the Paramounts were nice!), a Raleigh, a Fuji, or a few others, mostly Japanese, but no (or few) frame builders.
This is not just a cycling phenomenon. For those of you that are woodworkers like me, again, 40 or 50 years ago, there was Stanley, Millers Falls, and a couple others, but they were marginal at best. Now there is Lie Nielsen, Blue Spruce, Bad Axe, Knew Concepts, etc. Then, there are the small breweries and craft beer. I don't think there is a single town, or city, in the USA that doesn't have at least one small brewery. That is another example where quality has taken precedent over quantity and mediocrity. I think we are living in a second renaissance of sorts, where quality is considered much higher than quantity and mediocrity and the capitalism is working to support that. What do you think?
