OT: Mattresses

It's time to treat myself.

I have arthritis in my hips and shoulders, and am a side sleeper. I would like to get more than 4 hours sleep in a row. After a few hours I am tossing and turning due to shoulder pain. I am 5'10" and a pudgy 175lbs.

I have been researching for awhile, and get more confused by the minute. My wife has a Tempur-pedic Adapt hybrid, and that is too firm for me (we are old and snore-separate beds).

Hoping someone her can offer advice, because youse guys are really smart.

I've looked at Helix, Purple, Saatva, etc.

Anyone have any advice? I am the sort of person that doesn't return a mattress, so...

I bought a Leesa mattress about 18 months ago. At first I thought it was too soft. Now, after years of sleep on hard mattresses and in/on a tank in the Army, any other mattress feels hard to me!

Leesa has three models. I have the original one. Their pillows a comfy too!

I Googled "best mattress for shoulder pain" and got a lot of hits.

Here's one: https://www.sleepadvisor.org/best-ma...shoulder-pain/

Arthritis in hips n knees, side sleeper as well.
We went with a quality latex mattress. Great support for me,side sleeper n wife, back sleeper. Warms up quickly in winter but not real hot in summer. 2 3" n 1 4" layer of latex. Can move the layers to suite firmness.
Also put a 1.5" wool mattress pad on it. Great addition.
I do not see going to another type of mattress.

We've been using Select Comfort / SleepNumber beds for 25+ years...adjustable firmness and all that.

They work well.

(Probably due for a new one (10 years old) but the current still supports just fine. Not sure how often you are supposed to replace....I should look into that.)

We just purchased an "Avocado" bed for my older son....my wife researched it....all natural, climate neutral, blah blah blah. I laid on it after we got it set up...it was nice.

Saatva has worked well for me.

(Spellcheck keeps trying to change Saatva to Santa)

I looked at these, and I thought they may be too hard. They are all described as 'medium-firm'.

I am a side sleeper. Both my wife and I are lightweight. I bought a well-reviewed memory foam mattress on amazon 5ish years ago and could not be happier. Maybe $250 (queen size)?

I have a saatva, side sleeper but I like a good firm mattress. Works well for me. It's a shame there isn't somewhere you can test-sleep on these mattresses. It's such a personal decision.

Agreed. I am visiting the Tempur-pedic store this week to try a softer mattress than my wife has. There is also a Purple store nearby, so I can actually walk back and forth and compare.

I don't care what it costs, I just want to sleep.

Edit: a Leesa store also! It's nice being in near the part of PHX where the rich folk live.

Me too, it didn't work, though I am not lightweight.

We've been very happy with this Ikea mattress we bought a couple of years ago. It's pretty heavy and combines coils with foam.
