I sold that Serotta to the new owner, glad to see it's getting a new lease on life!

Thanks, this was very interesting and documented. Hope I never have to use your services...but if I do, I know where to find you. Question; why the heck did you move from CA to Minnesota?

This is the "after" photograph? Still dented...not trying to be a dick, just don't quite understand. AAR, swell frame well worth the effort!

From what I can see I'd say it's an early to mid 80s Club Special. Could be a Club Series which used clamp on shifters and had fender eyelets. Check the serial number. I'm pretty sure that early in the decade the serial began with 81, 82, 83, 84 to indicate the year. Some time in the middle of the decade they switched to a system where the first number indicated the year, so 1987 bikes start with 7, etc.

Got it. Thanks for your indulgence. When it's back from paint and built up will be a treat!

This bike is mine, purchased from brewsmith. I had originally intended to just fill the dent with metal epoxy, but then decided to get it fixed correctly. I communicated with Chris Kvale regarding the work, but of course he is presently unable to do anything. But he gave me some good advice and direction. I found Allan among a list of Twin Cities frame builders. Right from the get-go, he was excited to work on the frame, and he did a wonderful job! He really knows his way around fabricating metal. A couple things about the frame: the first two digits of the serial number on the rear dropout are obscured (first number ?, second number possibly 1 or 4, followed by 82). No number on the steerer tube (but there is a Columbus Dove stamping). I will strip the frame myself, but I plan on having it painted either Candy Blue or Red. It will be kitted out with full D-A 8-speed hardware.
I’m kinda bummed that Allan is moving - I’m sure I would have had more stuff for him to fix! |
