The Full Effetto Mariposa Carogna Tubular Experience

https://www.effettomariposa.eu/en/pr...arogna-family/

Includes:
Removing old tubular glue with CAROGNA REMOVER – MASTIC REMOVER
Adhesion Promoter for new tubular tire with EAU DE CAROGNA – ADHESION PRIMER
Tubular tape tire install with CAROGNA – DOUBLE SIDED TUBULAR GLUING TAPE

I wanted to document this because I've had a lot of good experiences with this stuff in the past but wanted to get the full experience down for others to reference over time.

Here is my setup, gloves, 68 degree basement and a few tools. Wheels are Carbon ENVE CX Tubulars with the rear having more old glue than the front. I'm allowing the full 10-12 hours for the rear, but will check on the front in 4-6 hours. Each wheel took 5-10 minutes to apply the remover and wipe excess off unwanted areas. I'm still undecided about removing the white Enve decals.

Tires are new Challenge Baby Limus Team Edition's and they will be stretched for a few days on the clean rimes before undergoing the adhesion promotion treatment and being taped.

Pics!

4 hour check in. Front wheel came out great. A little left over glue in the channel. I did run 1 round of Goo-Gone to finish these up.

After 4 hours

After Goo-Gone/Isopropyl pass

5 hour check in on the rear with heavy glue.

Update: Afer 7 hours and 45 minutes I took a run at the rear.
Overall, not that great but there were heavy layers of glue here.
I put a much thicker 2nd layer on and will be leaving it overnight for the full 12 hours.

After 7 hours 45 mins.

2nd Coat applied:

i am curious as to the removal portion for tape on carbon wheels. will you damage the carbon when you finally need to remove the tape?

good to know.

this was a nice write-up. i would consider tape, but i always thought it would be too much hassle to clean the rim bed, but that looks manageable.

You gotta get some kind of award for most computers on the work bench and least tools?

I wouldn't want to spill glue on a Mac!

Results are in. After 12 hours with a thick second coat we are in business. Minimal effort to scrape the glue with a plastic tire lever. I did use 1 pass of acetone to clean up the residual.

Overall, it worked great after 2 coats. Minimal elbow grease involved, but I still used 100% Acetone to get the little bits off. Did it work as easy as the video made it look? No. Was it worth $20? Yes.

After 12 hours:

After Acetone:

Now we stretch the tires and wait a few days.

Re: the carogna tape adhesive remover, I've found that if one were to wait too long (say a day), some of the solvent will evaporate, and a pink, somewhat dried out, and slightly flaky material is left on the rim.

It would appear that this doesn't happen if one removes the mess after 12 hours, but I wonder if Effeto suggests an optimal waiting period.

Optimal is "2-12" hours. They also mention, remover left on too long can dry up and revert the glue from a gel back into it's previously hardened state. I tried 4 hours, 8 hours, and 12. Longer was better for the thick stuff, but it also had 2 treatments. YMMV!
