“Vintage” Cannondale ST500 Tourer
Is it just me or does this look nothing like what the seller claims it is? The welds are terrible, missing seat tube bottle cage bosses, the cable guide on the chain stay appears to be misplaced, etc.

Looks like it decided to skip the dynafile station on it's way to the paint booth and then out the back door.
I'm not an expert but a quick look at the 1985 catalog seems to align with this model wrt cs guide and st bottle bosses: https://vintagecannondale.com/year/1985/1985.pdf Had a sensible chuckle Quote:

That thing isn't worth scrap value.

I had a few of these 80's sidepull Cannondale tourers and they were decent bikes. With all thats out there now i dont think i would pay 180 for the frame especially if the fork isnt included. Looking at the FB profile suggests he is a flipper who acquired the frame in a pile of stuff for cheap or free so make a much lower offer if you make it that far

Yep, it’s for real. The early ones (this is a first year model) had rather boogery welds. Even the 85’s could be a little raw. By 87-88 they had figured it out, finish quality was much, much better.
No fork = no bueno. |

Mine never looked that bad, but suppose it's possible. I had two 81983s I sold last year and they were much cleaner than this one. I wonder if somebody didn't reweld that before the powder coat due to it cracking at the welds?

Oof. It's overpriced by about $175 and may be usable as a trainer rat. But...I'd be embarrassed to be seen outside with it. Frankly, I'd be embarrassed to be seen inside with it

The cable guide on the chainstay is for the Suntour Suberbe Tech rear derailleur.

I remember this year's line up
The green one was cool. The local mtn bikers rose the alu frame with the small back wheel.

It looks "right".
I had a 1987 ST400 in Banana Yellow that I rode across Ireland, Wales, and England that summer on a 92nd Street Y teen tour. I loved that bike. Then I "loaned" it to my brother who rode it to school in the fall and it was stolen. I am still angry about it almost 40 years later. |

The following summer I bought something "racier"; an SR500 with the custom "Crest" graphics. I miss this one too. Also fell prey to NYC area thieves.
I am also still angry about this one... damn thieves. (photo is not my bike but is the stock setup). I love Cannondale bikes from this era when the paint/graphics were still very cool and evocative of the times. Last edited by NYCfixie; 04-11-2024 at 03:01 PM. |

I've owned several mid 1980s Cannondale touring frames and currently have a 1984 and a 1985. I've never seen a Cannondale frame with unfinished welds but I've never owned a 1983. This one on the vintageCannondale site appears to have unfinished welds:
https://community.vintagecannondale....truction.2136/ The easiest way to be sure would to be to examine the down tube shifter bosses, as they were unique to Cannondale. I really like these bikes but would try to find one with the original Tange fork, and a later one would be nicer looking. I've purchased at least one complete original ST bike for under $200. |
