Vermont 102

Went up from Guildhall to the edge of Canadia;-) with wife today. This road might have the best pavement in Vermont. Seriously! Beautiful day, low humidity, lovely views, no traffic... does it get better? Yes it does. A genuine French cafe bakery in Colebrook, USA across the river, and a nice little general store in Bloomfield, VT where one can grab some snacks and cold water. Anyone in the region who might head up this way would do well to take a day’s cruise up 102.

Posted this on my Custom Gallery thread "Ellis #003"...

125mi, 7,500ft of climbing, 7:13:30.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1643045829

I'd kind of had my eye on the Columbia Century Challenge earlier in the year, but its hard for me to plan more than a couple weeks out due to work and other commits, so I hadn't registered and had pretty much forgotten about it. I was surfing a bit on Thursday and came across it again. And then found out my wife was going to be in a yoga teaching seminar most of the day, so I knew I'd have a longer hall-pass than usual. So, what the heck, made plans for the 6:30a roll out...which turned into 7:15a for me, because, well, I'm slow going in the AM...so I missed out on any of the early, faster groups and resigned myself to a very long solo day. And that's what it was. Beautiful weather in the low-60s until the last couple hours when it punched up above 80. A great course with excellent marking and friendly support. A couple nasty climbs above 10% and some long ones, but manageable. And a wondrous tailwind for 5-10mi when we had to hit the highway shoulder before being thrown back up into the hills for the last 10mi or so. I picked up a few folks to ride with for 10mi or so at one point, maybe 15. And it was nice to have a bit of conversation on the biggest climb of the day. But the rest of it was solo, which honestly is preferable to me anyway...I enjoy the head-clearing time...and talking to cows.

And the Ellis performed magically as expected. 39x29 was feelin fine. 27c PRs at 73 Front, 75 Rear did me well on some seriously unmaintained backroads. To be cliche, this bike "turns heads". It was an organized ride, ridden 90% solo - and everybody loves this one...

I got out for a 42 mile road ride yesterday and am heading out for a flat 50 mile mixed terrain ride in a few minutes. The weather here has been beautiful!

Jealous! I keep telling myself that some day I can claw my way back to being able to do that.

Visiting in-laws in Sacramento. Stopped by Rex Cycles then hit the American River Bike Trail for 27 miles. It was stupid easy on the way out but paid dearly with ridiculous headwinds on the return trip in 93 degree heat.

That Rex deserves some close-ups!

Terrible Two double century yesterday, 202 miles, 18K' of crazy steep climbing (many pitches in the 15-20% range). Could barely get out of bed this AM.
