Easiest is with the shifter off the bike..YES, it is tough to snake the cable into the spool and up thru the shifter but if it's off the bike, it's a lot easier.

Also, use a new gear wire that has a soldered end...

Yes, essential. The tricky part is the transition back into the channel at the top of the lever body. You can bend and capture the tip of the cable into the correct channel with the end of a 2.5 mm allen wrench (irrc that's the one that fits the channel) and carefully push the cable from below.

Levers need to be at the fully released position when removing and installing the cable. A flashlight and a careful look will reveal the cable insertion point. (It's possible to install a cable and miss the critical insertion through the spool). Check out the cable and lever alignment as you remove the old cable; it is really straightforward, just a little fiddly to thread the new cable through.

So the cable entrance into lever body is at bottom of lever? I can't believe there isn't a schematic of it somewhere online.

IS tricky, thats why is better do it with the lever off the handlebar.

What you can do is to use a piece of old cable and pass it backwards from the exit into the lever and check where the holes are. 1st time I did a chorus 11 i had to do that. Once you know exactly there the holes are locate you do it as it should. I used the same trick potato is saying... the 2 mm allen wrench.

If you push the old cables out, then you know where the insertion point is. If you're starting from scratch, then check out this link. I agree that using a small allen wrench works to push the cable down into the channel. It's better than putting a kink in the cable. I never remove the levers to install cables, but if you do, put a mark or tape on the bars, at upper side of the clamp, so they can go back on, in the same place.

Any time I replace cables, I always leave a couple inches sticking out of shifter body so I know exactly where new cable goes in. I never pull old cable all the way out first.

Maybe I missed if if someone mentioned, but make sure you shift the RD into the the highest gear to place the shifter in a position to accept the new cable....
