I'm Out.

A recent thread here got me thinking.
It had a link to the new Cinelli Ram bar/stem combo. 900 dollars.
I saw this, and got sick to my stomach.

Now, I've got a 2000 CSI with all new campy and bling wheels.
I've also got a mid 90's Gitane with 8 speed and DT shifters.
The Gitane rides 90% as well as the CSI, and the complete bike cost less than my 06 Chorus brifters alone.

Yes, it's heavier, and a little out dated, but I have just as much fun riding it.

So I'm getting out of the modern bike consumerism cycle that is spiraling out of control.
I'm making the leapmo back to a bike that was tops when I was in 4th grade.
I just can't get behind spending such ludicrous amounts of money on a sport when i'm not a pro, I'm a student... in debt.

It just strikes me funny that to play soccer, all you need to do is spend 15 bucks on a ball.
That's the sort of thing I can get behind...
Anyway, here is a picture of my new main ride. I might even try to race on it. Hey, it's not about the bike, right?

Cheers,
Dan

That's a beautiful bike. And you are right. Unless you are into racing, you will do perfectly fine with a bike like that. Good for you!

Cool bike...

love the colors and the chromed fork. My two road bikes have DT shifters - fun to ride, I agree.

No, soccer in its basic form is much, much cheaper than cycling. Anyone can afford to play it (same with basketball in the Brooklyn projects). That's why it's the most popular sport in the world.

you'll love this...

Sure it's Aussie dollars, but they are nearly have nearly reached parody with the once mighty USD!

When combined with the stem, they make the RAM look like a bargain!

Dan, check out this website: http://www.gitaneusa.com/. Gitane has a very illustrious history.

No, we didn't need that stuff. A soccer, basket, or football was all we needed.....of course the regular trips to the emergency room could get spendy.

I kid you not.

The most basic joys of cycling come from the experience.

I've been riding with my son more. Each ride we go further from home. His smile from each new adventure is the payoff.
