Out of shape almost 40 former roadie bike snob needs a bike. Help wanted.

I haven't been actively cycling for the past 6 years and it's starting to show, my last roadish bike (Scandium Santa Cruz Stigmata CX) was recently stolen and not having a bike in the garage is unsettling. I need a new bike and am at a loss for what it's going to be. I need some help.

I'm looking for a super plush, eat up ****ty roads all day, dig in your pockets stable, modern steel bike with rim brakes and a slightly taller headtube with room for 28's or more that's a blast to ride. in a 58cm

What's an out of shape former bike snob roadie who's pushing 40 buy? Help a brother out.

If you are looking for a plush bike with rim brakes you might want to consider a Ti frame that is tuned (made) to be plush.

How deep are the pockets?

Gaulzetti Pavaix is the bike for that, only it's carbon.

I'm not committed to rim brakes but like the aesthetic. New Speedvagens are not in the budget. I'm inherently cheap and love a used bike. This time I've got a bit more of a budget but still have to stay married...

Try to find a Trek Domane. Carbon, of course. I have one and a Speedvagen and, honestly, I grab the Domane more often because of the roads around here.

So far I've learned that Gaulzetti makes carbon now and Speedvagen are ready-made. GTK. What else have I missed out on in 6 years?

Maybe a Gunnar Roadie or Sport, depending on just how stable you are looking for? Reasonable pricepoint, enough niche cachet to satisfy your inner snob.

Or look around the classifieds here - great customs get offloaded all the time. Lucky for you you're just about Clean 39t's size.

I just reduced the price on my buddies Eriksen to $1500 . . . search the classified section. Might fit the bill . . . If need be, I can probably dig up most of what you need to make it a complete bike.

Rivendell Rambouillet or Romulus would work.

I love the classifieds here. Will keep my eyes peeled. @andysti had a sweet bike that I almost pulled the trigger on. It may be the one that got away... I do want that really comfortable and stable ride quality though and not necessarily just a custom. However, a Hampsten SB and the Breadwinner B-Road do come to mind as examples of what I think I'm after.
