I do it because I am prone to scalp issues derived from bacteria derived from sweaty close fitted caps and helmets.
That doesn't mean everyone needs to. Bike caps... |

I use the washing machine on the delicate cycle. Then I let them air dry.

I clean my caps same as all my other gear, in the shower. I then hang to dry.

Ah. That makes sense. And yes, mine are totally nasty. Disgusting actually. I just don't care.

I put mine in a mesh wash bag and launder with my other cycling kit on gentle cycle. Hang to dry. They seem to last for years doing this, and I don't notice any brim deformation. Maybe that depends on the maker of the cap. The caps I have are from Rapha, Gore, and whatever vendor was used when we had a cap order via this forum a few years back. They are pretty nice quality.

In the regular wash, hang to dry.

But yeah when I was younger the idea of washing hats was a concept foreign to me. |

I ruined a few brims when I threw my cap in with the rest of my kit in the washing machine, even using the delicate cycle and hand drying. I've started putting my caps in the dish washer. Seems to work well enough.

I've had good luck with short brimmed cycling caps from TurificHandmade from Bucuresti, Romania through Etsy. Seems the brim is made of plastic and not cardboard. Throw in washer with clothes and hang to dry.
