Rivendell Atlantis

I’m in the process of turning my Atlantis into a dirt road/all road/whatever type bike. I bought one of these new in ~2002 when they were made in Japan, ultimately sold it to a friend and then bought this replacement (also Toyo-made) maybe five years ago. For scale, this is a 61 cm frame. It was originally set up as a townie-type bike, upright bars and so on. Still in process… I’m going to swap the Rene Herse 55c knobbies out for some 43c gravelkings. Otherwise no major changes planned for the moment, just tweaks here and there. This is mostly an accumulation of parts I had sitting around — 9 speed XT in the rear, CX double front derailleur, Sugino XD triple crank turned into a quasi-1x with a 40 tooth big ring but kept the bailout granny gear just in case, XT combo pedals, CX70 cantis (although may swap out for mini linear pull brakes). Nitto gravel bars (really liking these so far) and chromo stem. I even had some old matchy-matchy cloth tape that I’ve used as the chainstay guard. 20+ year old Riv saddle bag is temporary until I find something smaller.

I love this. I don’t know when then the geometry changed. Not fond of the current stretched out generation that looks like an extracycle.

Damn. That looks really nice set up this way. Dare I say it looks elegant and tough all at the same time?

Looks just about perfect to me. This was a great era for the Atlantis.

This is one of the good ones. The new, swoopy top tubed, ridiculously long chain stayed, roundy lugged models have no appeal to me. Ive been looking for one of these toyo models for about 5yrs now. I've finally given up and ordered a Singular Peregrine.

Nicely done!

The canti-brake version of the Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross is basically a tig-welded version of this.

Yep — it’s pretty close. The angles on this era of the Atlantis are 72/72. A couple of things about this early version of the Atlantis that set it apart (including from the Monstercross) are a deep BB drop (80mm) and pretty massive tire clearance (I’d say a good 2.25” vs about 1.95” for the MC). Chainstays on the Atlantis are 45.5, which I thought were longer than the MC but I see there is a good bit of horizontal adjustability on the MC. But in general it’s similar to recent gravel/monstercross bikes with big tire clearance. I’m not familiar with the changes to the more recent Atlantis models other than visually noting they have much longer chainstays.

Installed the 43c GK’s and went for a ~23 mile ride with a bit more than 2,000 feet of elevation gain (most of it off-road). Takeaways — need to change the saddle (can’t get comfortable on it) and change the pedals (too many pedal strikes while riding off-road).

great looking Atlantis.always regret not buying one when i had the chance before they put those crazy chainstays on the latest version.
a years or two back i called Grant to try and get one built by waterford but he didnt want to sell me one without those long chainstays.imo it sounded like he had a falling out with waterford based on our conversation
my X01 is a great bike but would prefer the fancier lugs and higher quality build of the atlantis

Hey there, great looking Atlantis! I have a 64cm Toyo and I love it also. If you are looking to get ride of those cx-70 cantilevers I would be happy to have them.

That is such an excellent looking bike - I am getting all soft and nostalgic for olde timey steel beast bikes.
