That's third gen and use shift springs from LH ERGO...it 'should' hold the gear really well. If it's really old and used lots, the shifting 'gear' may be worn out.

The other 'issue' is the shift, g springs were intentionally made 'weaker' in 1998 as 'some' complained about shifting being 'too stiff', so that may be an issue as well. A-B chorus or 1992/3 Chorus..if later, may be worn out as well..sloppy upper pivot.

SL-RE-019...only made from about 1992 thru 1994, so may be tough to find a new one. All the parts shown accounted for and assembled correctly?

Yep, all parts there. I put new current g springs in and it got better but still happens. Maybe try replacing SL-RE019, the gear ring? I really would love to keep it going as is since I'm still setting PRs on my 25 mile route despite the balky gears.

I ride my 1972 Bob Jackson occasionally because it's the bike I have set-up with rack and fenders and toe clips rather than clipless pedals. It's 9 speed Shimano. All the Nuovo Record stuff on it originally was worn to nubbins, and I bought a bike that had hung in a basement for 40 years and took the almost new Campy stuff off it and it's all in a drawer waiting for a day when someone else wants it as a real period piece. Even the Tektro dual pivots work better than the Campy sidepulls.

Do what you want, life's too short. I personally think carbon and lugs works together well.

When I converted my 8 speed Record DT shifters to 9 speed, I picked up a 9 speed ring from Ebay, meant for the bar end shifters (IIRC, SL-RE219). Works like a charm, and they've never dropped a gear.

Thanks, back to the parts search. I saw it while looking for the springs so one shouldn't be hard to find.

But that's for a 3 spring shifter..OPs is 2 spring and never any 9s discs for 2 spring. He 'may' find a 2 spring disc for 8s..pretty rare tho.

I'm putting Record 10 Carbon Compact on my Master Olympic

I've gone through the hassle of assembling two period correct groups, one for a Raleigh Pro 753, and the second for my Colnago Spiral Conic SLX. Never ended up putting either on the bike... there's just too much goodness in the newer stuff.

That having been said, I don't think I'd go EPS on the Master Olympic.

But...give me a couple of years...we'll see!

I used to be into the old parts, downtube friction shifters, the works. It was a great way to learn how to work on bikes. That said, once I got one Ergo equipped bike, I have no desire to go back.
