I recommend checking out the just-released WTB Byway -- full (guest) review here.

In a nutshell, yes.

+1 on the byways; I'm riding a set of samples as well and they're surprisingly great. to touch on what gravelbike said, pass on the horizons given the byways' versatility.

so if you want to ride more pavement, get the horizons (even though I do prefer a 42 in the pavement), if you want to ride more gravel get the biway?

Man, I want WTB to come out with a 42mm tire.

I want them to offer the Byway and Horizon in 700x60 versions. Schwalbe discontinued the Super Moto and that tire was a blast to ride on paved and unpaved roads. A bigger Horizon or Byway would be an excellent replacement.

hey, why not, I would be donw with that. While they are at it, gimme some big 26in tires too because I would love to have a cheaper, more robust rat trap pass

I guess that means you found the Big One/G One to be too fragile or short lived?

I run really wide rims (i45) and tires with extremely supple casings (like the Big One/G One) can be difficult to mount w/o tubes. Using the Big/G with tubes was fine, but it sort of defeated the(ir) purpose.

Why run a rim that wide (and heavy) unless you're running 2.8"+ tire? I'm guessing you do that sometimes.

I have an WTB i45 on the front of my 29er, but a Flow Mk3 in the rear (my bike won't fit larger than 2.4" in the rear).

Jeff Jones spec'd the bike's rims, and he's a big fan of wider rims. The smallest (knobby) front tire I run is a 29x2.6 Nobby Nic, and I sometimes run a 3" WTB Ranger. For paved roads or mixed terrain I use the aforementioned 29x2.35" Super Motos, and I plan on giving the new 700x50 Terrene Honali tires a try.
