Road Cranks: Stance/not-Q Q-factor

Wondering if anyone has numbers for the distances between common cranks at the outer face where the pedals are inserted. Look cleats don't allow a lot of side-to-side adjustment and I don't want to use too many washers.

Novice question, what's the difference between Q-Factor and the measurement you need?
