Let’s not overhype this.

A brake rotor is nothing like a circular saw blade nor are chainrings.

Comparing the teeth of a chainring to the precisely shaped and sharpened saw teeth on a circular saw blade spinning at 3,450 r.p.m. greatly sensationalizes any issues related to safety and certainly confuses the issues.

I believe the op had the best intentions but this thread is an example of how quickly the discussion over disc brakes can spin out of control.

His bars are hooked on the guard rail... instant finger loss. Those things are worse than a disc for sure.. they're not smoothed at all and if you hit the guard rail and get hooked the riders entire momentum is behind the slicing action whereas a disc is just the momentum of the wheel spinning in most cases. Also there are no disc brakes in the picture!

There are lots of ways to injure your finger badly in a bike race without disc brakes.

My only racing ER visit was a finger injury just caused by my finger getting smashed between my handlebar & a rim of a flying bike that hit me.

Stop hyperventilating about discs!

You sure?

Which one of these doesn't belong?

Hell with cost-this means EXTRA BIKE WEIGHT! WORSE AERODYNAMICS!

The horror...

Removing material to create the radius should reduce weight. A guard, if designed correctly, may be more aerodynamic. Something for the industry to work on.

Let's hope those ambulance chasers that advertise all afternoon long on Judge Judy and Maury Povich don't run across this thread.

If true, this would explain a lot for me.
