OT: coffee grinder reccomendations?

When Publix took out their coffee grinders, we bought the Cuisinart burr mill coffee grinder.....its inconsistent -- one day will grind enough for 4 cups, the next 8...and its still on the same setting! Anyway, the thing is junk and we've had enough.

Sooo --- we buy whole bean coffee and use a coffee press, so, need something that does a good job with a coarse grind. I know you guys will give me some good options!

Depends on how much you want to spend, as you know.

I'm a coffee newb but I just bought a baratz encore. Upgrading from blade. Was debating between baratz and breville smart grinder but was advised that encore was better.

I know there are lots more coffee experts out there than me but encore was my budget be interesting to see if I can taste diff. If I do, great. Another hobby with upgrades.

Baratza

Went with a refurb Baratza Virtuoso about 7 or 8 years ago and it has been perfect.

Operation and cleanup are a breeze and I never wonder if it is doing a good job. It just works like it is supposed to every time I use it.

+1 on the encore. I have a Baratza Virtuoso, it has a better burr set, but for just coarse grinds the encore will do great.

Baratza has refurbs on their website, that may be an cheaper route...

Budget matters...

After acclimating to European coffee on a few trips, I went on the quest to make similar stuff back in the US. I gave myself an initial budget and then started to talking with a few folks who knew a lot about coffee/espresso. They stopped just short of laughing at what I had budgeted.
I ended up with a Compak K3 grinder, which has been exceptional.
My initial target, however, was a Baratza. From my initial research, their refurbished machines were the way to go. You can find them HERE. If you navigate around the tabs of that page you can find more information on the differences between each option and narrow down what you want/need.

Baratza Virtuoso is the way to go.

Wait did someone say that already?

Mine did fail a couple of times. Had to install the gear kit with the updated nylon drive gear. New ones should all have that already.

Another happy Baratza Encore owner. I only grind for Aeropress and french press, so no need for super-fine espresso grinds.

just took delivery of Baratza Encore

I mostly hated my little helicopter mill grinder due to very uneven grinding and having to clean up after it after every grind. But I only use an a little Aeropress, so grind not critical. After one session, a little less messy than the other and the grind is really uniform. Not sure I can taste the difference, but now I'm in with the in crowd.

I've had a Rancilio Rocky since 2004 and other than cleaning it every so often it hasn't needed a thing.
Does a great job with both fine and course ground settings. I skipped the doser version and went with the standard.

11 years on and it still gets used every day someone is home.

Been using this one for 2-3 years and have had no problems whatsoever. Solid build, adjustable grind, and looks decent on the counter.

+1 ... my Rocky is an amazing, dependable work horse, with consistent grinds every time. Going on 10 years with mine.

If you want exact measuring, the Baratza Vario W is awesome for drip. Add the steel burrs and you have one of the best, accurate and easiest to use grinders there are...

Now, for espresso, that's a whole different ( and much more expensive) story.

Good luck!

Steve

I've had that one for about 4 years now as well and happy with it. We probably use it over 1,000x a year.

We've had the Breville at the office for about 2 years, used twice daily:
