headset press --> adapting to face as well?

has anyone ever tried adapting a headset press to also function as a facing tool?

i have a taiwanese headset press as pictured. well made. seems like all the essential bones are there for facing, except for the cutting tools of course.

of course, the cutter ID would have to be compatible with the OD of the shaft.

is there anything else i'm missing?!

You're not wrong, however after you get the cutter and assorted bits to center it, etc you might have already bought a proper toolset.

actually...i have an icetoolz BB facing/chasing toolset...the HT facing cutter doesnt foul the frame, so if i can figure out a way to keep it centered in a 1-1/8" HT it may do the trick!

...lemme noodle on this a bit...

You dont really have any of the key components of a facing tool.

The way a facing tool works is a bit different than the way a press works. The facing tool utilizes a spring preloader on the bottom to ensure even pressure on the cutting tool without "driving" the cutting tool into the head tube.

So, while you have the threaded rod and opposite end centering drifts, you are missing the spring preload attachment, cutting tool and cutting tool centering drift, and a way to fix those to the drive handle. That's most of what the actual tool is.

I'd add that you can do a lot more harm than good trying to face a head tube with the wrong tools.

IMO, of course

Also if you're just after removing paint let's say and not metal you could probably get by with sandpaper and some kinda centering cone. If you think faces aren't parallel and metal needs to be removed it's obvious a bigger investment. I don't know how many adjacent machining tools would have that bore, most would probably be designed for a mill or lathe?

update --> fail

got my custom spacers in.

but its not gonna work out...i didnt look enough moves ahead in this chess-match...and my threaded rod is too short...would be fine on something mayb 56cm or smaller...but i ride bikes on the bigger end of the spectrum...derp!

i might be able to source a longer threaded rod with the right thread pitch. maybe. but then i'd have to rig up a fixed-end of the facing tool. lemme noodle on this.

edit: looks like the threaded rod is 1/2x12TPI...seems like an unremarkable/inexpensive spec. but all i can find is 12x13TPI...maybe i'm miscounting threads?!
