Sounds normal. I couldn’t find a bike shop able to face a bottom bracket. I had to contact a frame builder.

i've used FSA Duron and Orbits forever, are you sure

the rubbery seal things that go in after each bearing are oriented correctly. if you get them in upside down, then preload no worky too goody.

C’mon man. Seriously??!!

You’ve not only deprived me of a trip to a bike shop but also potentially a new CK headset.
That fixed it. I had those washer/seal on upside down on both ends!! I swear they were like that out of the box but I will blame this on user error. You are the man! Now no clunking and preload is right where I want it. Thanks!!!!

I recently had something similar happen with a threadless headset. After trying a bunch of different things, I took a close look at the spacers and measured them with a caliper. I discovered one of them wasn't cut at a 90 degree angle. The faces weren't parallel as one side was a lot higher than the other. It looked like ramp.

me. that's two fixes for two paceliners in two days. both on headsets. damn! truly glad when i can be helpful.
